The Fulton J. Communiqué
January 2012
Grand Knight's Report
Brothers and Council Family,
Happy New Year! The end of the calendar year means that our Columbian Year is half over. The first half of the year was chock full of activities. The second half gives our fundraising teams a bit of a rest, but don’t get too comfortable. I want to personally thank Tony Gioio for the yeoman’s job he’s done heading up the concession stand team this year. No matter how much resistance he ran into recruiting volunteers to work football games, he always made it work. I see one more game in our future for this season. It’s going to be a short notice call for help. I encourage anyone who is available for the home playoff game to step up and give Tony and his team a hand.
This month there are other opportunities to pitch in. The annual March for Life in DC is on Monday the 23rd, Al Grasley has the details. The Polar Bear Plunge is on the 27th and 28th. This is a great chance to help out Special Olympics. Plunge yourself, sponsor a plunger (David Love and Steve Zyla both plunge) or you can volunteer to work traffic control. To volunteer, contact Walt Wankowski for details at wwanko@comcast.net. And we are serving breakfast at the church on the 29th for our regular 5th Sunday Parish Breakfast. Please let Tom Greul know if you can help out (or if you’d like to take this project on as chairman).
Next month, we see The Baltimore Chapter of Grand Knight’s Anniversary Bull and Oyster Roast, our Valentine’s Romantic Evening (we might move it from the 11th to the 18th, what do you think?), The Colleen’s Valentine’s Project, Pancake Supper and the start of Lenten dinners.
Shoulder to Shoulder in service,
Bill Rooney,
Grand Knight

District Deputy's Report
Brother Knights and Families,
It’s been a very impressive 1st half of the year in District 21. Recordkeeping and reports have been outstanding. Council 1393 is leading the district in its membership recruitment drive. I thank everyone for all of their efforts. Membership and reporting are everyone’s responsibilities. Your financial secretary need your input on the number of hours and charitable contributions made this year by the end of January.
A new form 100 has been distributed by Supreme Council. Make sure you receive a copy and the supporting membership documentation to keep you informed. Let’s keep the ball moving by adding to the growth of the Order and of our councils.
As directed by Supreme Council, membership is a major focus during this time of year. Continued formation of our present membership must always be in focus. Our degrees play a vital part in strengthening our foundation. All knights are encouraged to complete their journey through all four degrees, and renew those lessons by attending these degrees as often as possible. Many degrees are scheduled in and near our district in the coming months:
January 11 - 1st degree at Council 7612 at 7:30 pm
January 17 – 2nd degree at Council 1393 at 7:30 pm
February 7 – 1st degree at Council 1393 at 7:30 pm
February 17 – 3rd degree at Council 12255 at 7:30 pm
March 3 – 4th degree at the Holiday Inn, Frederick, MD- registration deadline is February 10.
The March for Life will be held in Washington D.C. on January 23. Please consider supporting your council and the Order in this vital program. Join us by reserving your seats on the buses departing from the parishes in the district.
Our programs are vital to introduce new members and their families to the benefits and principles of our order. New members are vital to the continued support, growth, and administration of our programs and of our order. Ask a Catholic man to join our order today! Always carry a form 100
District 21 in the Beacon
Once again, District 21, with two great articles from Westminster 1393, is well represented in the State newsletter. (See the link for the Beacon at the end of the Communique’) Our Lady of Guadalupe article displays the support for the parish and the Spanish community from the council and the James Cardinal Gibbons Assembly!
Helping a brother in need with the wheel chair ramp is not only a great article, but a rewarding fraternal and charitable event! Thank you Westminster council.
Congratulations to John Trainor of St Bartholomew Council 9127 for the State Council recognition for all the hard work and leadership over the years. Also, Congratulations to council 5208 for its recognition by Supreme Council. 7612 Archbishop Fulton Sheen was recognized as the number 1 in sales of raffle tickets again this year.
With a strong brotherhood and God's grace, amazing things happen. Share this opportunity with another Catholic gentleman!

7612 Council Family,
The only thing I have to report this month is we will be running a Bull and Oyster/or shrimp roast at St Joseph church on April 28th 2012. We are in the early planning stages still and we hope that the income from this event will be able to allow us to redo the parking lots and make them much nicer and permanent. When you see the info come out about our long awaited bull roast, please buy your tickets early and invite all of your friends.

Lecturer's Report
The Council Annual Christmas party was held on Saturday, December 3rd at the Council home. The theme was “An Italian Christmas”. This party was one to remember! Over 113 Knights & family members came to enjoy the festivities.
Many, many thanks to our Chefs – Weido DiMaio, Alex and Angie Pacifico who prepared delicious lasagna and Chicken Parmesan dinner, the best I have ever tasted! The dinner was served Italian family style which everyone seemed to love. After dinner everyone enjoyed a table full of Italian desserts including cannolis! A very special thank you to Weido and Alex and Angie for all that you did to make this dinner so special.
After dinner, we had a very special encore singing of the twelve days of Christmas. It was a great deal of fun. Then, by special invitation Santa arrived and presented gifts to the children and posed for pictures. Remember to check our website to view the pictures and print out those of your children. A very special to Larry Brown for – well you know… thanks for that very special visit.
We then had an Italian gift exchange. This was a lot of fun as there were a wide variety of gifts being exchanged. There were some really desired gifts and the exchange was enjoyed by all.
This Annual Christmas Party was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thanks to the social committee and a special thanks to our Sheen’s Colleens for all their help and the decorating of the hall. The Christmas trees and other decorations were really beautiful!
The social for January is on Wednesday, January 25th at 6 PM, It is the return of the Summer Beach Party – minus the sand! Even though it may be below zero outside, it is going to be 80 degrees inside and we are going to enjoy a day at the beach! We will provide hamburgers and hot dogs for everyone, just like you would get at the beach. We are asking every family to bring a dish that you would eat at the beach like potato salad, macaroni salad, etc. Don’t forget the desserts.
We will have several games that you play at the beach. I cannot wait! So, bring your beach towels, your swim suit and your very special beach hat and join us on January 25th! Please RSVP to me using the info above by January 21st!

For the Good of the Order
Good of the Order at the November Business Meeting was won by George Moriatis. George was present and claimed the $99 pot.
Good of the Order winner at the December Business Meeting was Craig Beebe. Brother Craig was not at the meeting so the pot for the January meeting increases to $59. You must be in attendance to win the Good of the Order drawing!
From the Desk of the Benefits Advisor
We at Knights of Columbus are certainly proponents of whole life insurance. But term life insurance is also a critically important financial tool. The differences between the two, in a nutshell, are that term life insurance is designed to provide temporary not permanent protection, perhaps for a "term" of twenty years. Term life insurance, unlike KofC whole life insurance, does not accumulate a guaranteed cash value nor does it participate in the KofC dividend scale. What term life insurance does best for a family is provide a sufficiently large death benefit on Dad and Mom....inexpensively.
LIMRA, a leading research firm for the insurance industry, calculated in 2011 that only 41% of adult Americans have individual life insurance. Many rely on "group" insurance through their work leaving them vulnerable if they lose a job or if their employer decides to discontinue that benefit in a cost cutting measure. Most people who have coverage don't have enough. Typically employee group plans provide two times the employee's yearly income.
SThe U.S. Justice Department calculated compensation to meet the needs of families of victims of the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks, and recommended approximate payments of twelve times the annual income of couples with no children and twenty times the income for families with children.
As practical Catholics, we Knights of Columbus are mindful of the eschatological nature of our time here on earth. And we protect those who love us and depend upon us. So please call me or email me using the contact information listed above so we can analyze the life insurance that you have vs. the life insurance that you should have. It is my duty as Council Benefits Advisor to provide this fraternal service for you. Life insurance is Love insurance. Life insurance with Knights of Columbus is "a benefit of brotherhood".

Sheen's Colleens Corner
Hello ladies,
As we look back on last month and last year as a whole, I believe that we are a very blessed group of women. We were able, with the help of God’s grace, to accomplish all of our goals. We helped out in our community where we saw a need. We aided the Knights whenever they requested our assistance. We came together and shared our thoughts, ideas, and hopes. Our Christmas get together was very well attended and a great time was had by all. My thanks to Heather Greul for coordinating the evening. I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas and that the New Year holds only the best for each and every one of you.
We have some dates of importance in the upcoming months ahead. The Colleen’s are collecting money for the annual Valentine Flower Project on the weekend of the 14th and 15th of January after all masses. If you are available to help, please contact Charlene Heyden at 410 549-7772 or cheyden2@comcast.net.
The Valentine Flower project is also set to take place the 11th of February. I am sure Charlene will need as many hands on deck as possible for this worthy effort. Please contact Charlene at the number listed above if you can help in any way. There are many ways to assist!
We are also collecting items for the Welcome Home Project (bottled water, individual sized snack bags of chip/cookies) after mass on the weekend of the 28th and 29th please contact Heather Gruel at 410 795-5931 or at hgreul3@gmail.com or Jeanne O’Sullivan for additional information. Our January meeting is scheduled for the 18th at 7:00 pm. I hope to see you all there!
Thank you and God Bless.

Squires Activities
Worthy Knights, at the beginning of this year for Squires, the Counselors requested for the Squires take on the role of planning events. In this past month, we did exactly that.
For the second year in a row, our current Chief Squire, Joe Hiltz, is planning a service event in January at My Brother’s Keeper, a soup kitchen in Catonsville.
Jack Rogness planned for the Squires to return to the airport for Operation Welcome Home. We had to scratch our visit planned over the holidays at the last minute. We will take up this issue at our January meeting. Jack also scheduled a trip to the National Christmas Tree for our December social. Most of the Squires attended and it was a good visit overall.
As another step in improving communications and publicity, Zach Harvatine, Deputy Chief Squire, took action to set up a Facebook page for our Circle.
At our December business meeting, the Squires discussed where to donate the funds raised at the most recent Krispy Kreme fundraiser. Three Squires were assigned to choose a charity and report back next business meeting, where the full Circle will vote on which to donate to.
Father Neville also sat in at the December business meeting. We are grateful for this first participation in a regular Squires meeting by a priest. Near the end of the meeting, Father led the Squires in a spiritual discussion. To get in the spirit for the Christmas season, Father Neville discussed the difference between wishing and hoping. He asked for a wish from each Squire. After listening to each wish, he then explained that a wish is not something that can be controlled, while a hope is something you can influence, whether it is through physical actions or praying. Father Neville then asked the Squires if their wishes are really wishes, or if they are hopes. He left the Squires to ponder that question until we reconvene January 5th.

James Cardinal Gibbons Assembly #379
The James Cardinal Gibbons Assembly of the fourth degree continues to be very active in our councils. The color corps attended all of the Memorial masses where they lead the clergy in and out of church and stood watch and honored our brothers that have gone on before us by saluting for each man and woman on the list. Thank you to the members of this council who are a part of the color corps and for the members of the assembly who continue to show support for our order and our great nation. If you are not a member of the fourth degree yet and you wish to finish your journey toward full knighthood, please let me or our Grand Knight know. There is a two page flyer at the end of the communiqué with all of the information about the fourth degree exemplification which will be held on March 3rd in Frederick Md.
The Assembly will also be holding a USO type dance on March 10 at the VFW hall on Pool road in Westminster. More info will be emailed to everyone next month and will be in future communiqués.

Chancellor's Report
I am pleased to report that our Council and the Sheen’s Colleens have once again sponsored Seminarians Joshua Laws and Jonathan Gibbons. The sponsorship funds were mailed to them before Christmas, and I hope that alleviates some of their financial burdens as they continue with their seminarian studies.
I am also pleased to report that the Charity Committee members discussed and forwarded motions at the December business meeting to assist a fellow Brother in financial need, in the amount of $500, and a donation in the amount of $200 to sponsor Brother David Love in the Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge. Dave is responsible for his own hot cocoa though - bbbrrrrrrrrr!

Pro-Life Report
The 39th March for Life is January 23, 2012
As you flip through the pages of the January 2012 Columbia Magazine, there is one theme. LIFE! As I read the articles I thought our Supreme Knight Carl Anderson summed it up quite nicely;
“A law ‘that is out of harmony with the moral law’ can never be regarded as ‘settled’ as long as there are men of conscience, men of determination and men who understand that our nation will be judged by the respect we give to every person - even to the least among us.”
It took us 58 years to overturn the segregation laws of 1896, and we are in the 39th year of Roe v Wade. At this point in time the number of abortions in the United State since Roe V Wade are somewhere around 50 million, approximately 3,000 a day, a sad statistic.
Currently the plans to attend the March are influx. I am not sure if St. Joseph’s is going to have a bus. For certain we will have a rally point to join fellow parishioners and partake in this March. People come from all over the county to attend and it is truly an uplifting experience. Please make plans now to attend this important event, and watch for an e-mail flash for an update on a bus and rally point.
Teenager’s hard choice
The following story was in the news right after Thanksgiving. I am hesitant to write about it, there are issues in regard to pre-marital sex, and divorce that do not reflect the Christian values, but the choice of this girl is remarkable.
Jenni Lake was an Idaho teenager who had cancer at the age of 16. Her journey is documented on YouTube under Jenni’s journey. At age 17 she became pregnant. She was told a pregnant woman could not receive chemo treatments without damaging or killing her fetus.
She had two options: get an abortion and continue being treated for cancer, or keep her pregnancy and prepare to die.
She chose option two, and paid for it with her life. "I'm done," Lake told her nurse just before delivering a healthy baby boy. "I did what I was supposed to do. My baby is going to get here safe."
Jenni Lake died on Nov. 21, 2011, shortly before Thanksgiving Day. She was not yet 18 years old.
January 18 Mass Honoring the Sanctity of Human Life
At 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday January 18, days before the annual March for Life commemorating the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, St. John the Baptist parish in Silver Spring will host a special Mass sponsored by the Knights of Columbus of Maryland to pray for greater respect for the sanctity of human life. Father David Brault, pastor of St. John's, will be chief celebrant and homilist. Immediately following the Mass, Richard M. Doerflinger will give a brief talk in the Lyon Center, “After 39 Years: Where Does Our Nation Stand on Abortion?” Mr. Doerflinger has advised the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on pro-life legislation for over 30 years. Light refreshments will be provided. St. John the Baptist's council of the Knights, Council #11106, cordially invites other Knights and their spouses to both events. St. John the Baptist is at 12319 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20904, a mile north of the White Oak shopping center at the intersection of Route 29 and NH Avenue.

Membership Report
We will be hosting a first degree this month during our January Council business meeting on January 11, 2012. Membership is a high priority of the State and Supreme this year and we all need to work together to reach our membership goal. Invite someone you know or see regularly at church to become a Knight. We need new members to support the many activities of our very active Council. If you have a candidate please contact me as soon as possible so we can interview him to be installed in January. We all need to work hard to make this a successful first degree.
January 17, 2012 and Walkersville will be hosting a third degree on February 17, 2012. These are two great opportunities for any first and second degree members to take their next degrees.
Contact me if you need any information, forms or need to refer a candidate. Please wear your membership badges to church. Let’s all work together so we can share something we all enjoy with others.
